Annual reports, 1960-1985 [state publication].

The annual reports contain statistics for public libraries in the state and for the Service; narrative summaries of activities, programs, services, and accomplishments; and financial statements. With the exception of 1968 and 1974, reports for fiscal years 1960 through 1975 are titled Statistics of Public Libraries in Alabama. Enumerated are hours of operation, income, the book stock, and circulation, by county and region. Other reports consist of the report of the director, which gives overviews and highlights of the year, a summary of divisional activities, including the Division of the Blind and Physically Handicapped, and discussions of the status of federal grants and plans, programs, and systems implemented. Activities of cooperative programs - the Humanities Resource Center, the Friends of Alabama Libraries, the Coalition for the Preservation of Alabama Newspapers, etc. - are also reported. Statistical information measures hours of operation, full-time staff, resources, circulation, income, and expenditures of public libraries. In addition, directories list single county and multicounty regional libraries and the multitype library system, giving the name, address, telephone number, names of the librarian and board chairperson, and hours. Organizational charts, financial statements, and details of Library Services and Construction Act projects are also present. Besides documenting the activities of the agency, the series is useful in tracing the development of public library services in the state. Similar information may be found in the progress reports of the agency.
